Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Miami Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in Miami typically runs $145 – $320 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, a damaged intercom board, or the entire housing. We stock Linear-compatible keypads and intercom modules on our trucks, so most repairs are done the same day we arrive. What usually brings the call in: a keypad that worked fine for four years and now needs five hard presses before the gate decides to move, or an intercom buzzer that’s been silent since the last big storm rolled through.

Call (850) 821-3781

Miami’s salt air and humidity are hard on this equipment. We see corrosion inside the keypad housing long before the buttons stop responding, especially on properties east of US-1 where the ocean breeze carries enough salt to eat through the weatherstripping on a six-year-old keypad. By the time a button sticks or an intercom speaker crackles, the damage underneath is usually already underway.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

We repair the Linear keypads and intercoms that show up on most Miami residential gates: the AK-11 and AK-21 standalone keypads, the ACP series access controllers, the AE-100 and AE-500 telephone entry systems, and the M-Series intercom modules that pair with Linear gate operator boards. If you’re not sure which one you have, pop the keypad face off with a flathead screwdriver – the model number is printed on the back of the circuit board, not on the outer cover, which catches a lot of people off guard.

The important compatibility gotcha with Linear is this: AK-11 keypads from before 2012 used a different wiring protocol than the AK-11s sold today. They look nearly identical from the outside, but the older boards won’t talk to newer Linear gate operator control boards without a converter. If someone just swaps in a brand-new keypad without checking the operator board revision, you’ll get a keypad that lights up and beeps but won’t actually open the gate. That’s a call we’ve made more than a few times.

For replacement parts, Linear OEM keypads are solid but pricey – expect $60 – $110 for the part alone. Quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like All-O-Matic and Precision run $40 – $70 and, in our experience, survive Miami weather just as well because the housing design is the vulnerable point, not the circuit itself. We carry both and we’ll tell you the honest difference before you spend a dollar. Calder Gate Repair Miami is an independent service provider – we’re not affiliated with Linear – but we’ve been repairing their stuff long enough to know the parts on sight.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Buttons need multiple presses or only work in the morning. This is corrosion building up on the membrane contacts under the buttons, not the buttons themselves. Morning works because the housing hasn’t baked in the sun yet and the metal contacts are slightly expanded. It’ll get worse, not better.
  • The intercom speaker crackles or drops to one-way audio. The speaker cone has degraded from humidity cycling – Miami’s wet season and dry season alternating isn’t kind to paper cones. Some days you hear the visitor, some days you don’t. That’s the speaker, not the wire.
  • Gate opens randomly, usually in the early evening. This one scares people, but it’s almost always a keypad backlight shorting against the housing and sending a false trigger. The evenings thing isn’t a ghost – it’s the temperature dropping and condensation forming inside the housing.
  • Keypad backlight stays on constantly or never comes on. Constant-on is a failing relay on the keypad board. Never-on is usually the photocell sensor that’s supposed to trigger the light when someone approaches. Both are board-level repairs, not bulb issues.
  • Intercom hums even when nobody’s at the gate. That’s a ground loop or a failing capacitor on the intercom board. If you hear a low electric hum in the house phone every time the gate is mentioned, the intercom board is the likely culprit.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what a Linear keypad or intercom replacement actually costs in Miami as of 2026. These are installed prices, not parts-only. The range swings based on whether we’re doing a straight part swap or also pulling new low-voltage wire through the masonry – which we have to do more often than most people expect, because Florida ants love eating through the wire insulation inside the gate pillar.

  • Single keypad replacement (AK-11 equivalent): $145 – $190
  • Keypad plus new wiring run to the board: $190 – $250
  • Intercom speaker/module replacement: $165 – $225
  • Telephone entry system (AE-100/AE-500) board replacement: $240 – $320

Every estimate includes the part, the labor, and any weatherproofing we do around the housing. We write the price down and hand it to you before anything gets pulled off the wall. If the invoice at the end doesn’t match the number on that sheet, it’s not an invoice we expect you to pay. Every repair also carries Calder Gate Repair Miami’s 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the keypad or intercom fails within a year due to our workmanship, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things around a gate are worth doing yourself. Low-voltage keypad wiring is not one of them, and here’s why: the control board on the gate operator side can be damaged if you short the wrong two wires while the system is powered. A new Linear control board runs $200 – $500 depending on the model. Saving a $150 service call to then pay $400 for a board you fried is the wrong math.

What you can safely check: make sure the keypad housing isn’t visibly cracked or full of water (if it is, power the system down at the breaker before touching anything), and check that the keypad’s backplate is still firmly mounted to the pillar. Loose mounting lets water behind the housing, which kills the board from the back. Beyond that, call us. We’ll diagnose it on the first visit, not schedule a second trip to figure it out. One call to (850) 821-3781 and we’ll have a tech out with parts on the truck.
