Linear Access Control Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear access control systems and parts across Miami, with most installations running between $400 and $1,400 depending on the reader, keypad, and wiring scope. This is not a same-day-and-done job like a spring swap: we build a quote first, schedule the work, and typically complete most residential access control installs in half a day. If your Linear keypad stopped accepting codes, or the gate stopped responding from the driveway reader, you’re in the right place.

The way Miami owners usually discover a failed access control component is simple: the gate opens fine from the remote, but not from the keypad. Or the property manager calls to say the tenant code won’t clear. That’s when the diagnosis gets specific, because Linear made several access control lines over the years, and the fix depends on which one you have. Nico Alvarez has been chasing these exact failures since his days on commercial gate systems in Southern California, and the humidity here in Miami turns small electrical problems into dead boards faster than anywhere else we’ve worked.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear access control spans a few distinct lines: the AE-100, AE-500, and AE-1000 telephone entry systems, the AM-KP keypads, and the reader/keypad combos commonly paired with older Linear gate operator boards. The compatibility gotcha we see most often is this: an AE-500 keypad looks nearly identical to an AE-100, but the wiring protocol is different, and swapping one for the other without checking the board revision will leave you with a bricked controller. If you can open the housing, look for the model label on the green circuit board itself, not the outer casing.

For homeowners, OEM Linear parts are the safest path when the original system is still in place. But for older systems, a quality aftermarket reader often outperforms the original, especially on exterior keypads where Florida sun and salt air have baked the housing brittle. We stock both on the truck, and we’ll tell you when an aftermarket part is genuinely the better move instead of just the cheaper one.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad itself is working, which means the failure is downstream: a relay on the control board, a broken wire from the keypad to the operator, or a dead output on the operator’s accessory terminal. We test this with a meter before quoting any board replacement.
  • Some codes work, others don’t. Linear systems with programmable user codes store each code in memory. When the memory chip starts going bad, newer codes drop first. This is repairable in some models with a full reset and reprogram; in others it means the board is on borrowed time.
  • You hear a hum or click from the keypad but nothing else. The keypad is getting power and trying to trigger the relay. The relay itself may be welded shut or burned. We see this a lot in Miami after heavy rain events when a keypad seal has failed.
  • The display is blank, but the gate still opens from the remote. The access control component has lost power while the operator itself hasn’t. Nine times out of ten it’s a power issue at the keypad: a blown inline fuse, a corroded connection, or a transformer that got wet.
  • Keypad housing is cracked or buttons are sticky. Miami sun breaks down plastic housings faster than the electronics fail. Water gets in, and the board short circuits within months. This is the failure we can see coming from the driveway, and it’s the cheapest one to prevent.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what a Linear access control installation in Miami typically costs, installed:

  • Single keypad replacement (like-for-like): $400 – $650
  • Keypad plus control board swap: $700 – $1,000
  • Full telephone entry system with two keypads: $1,000 – $1,400
  • Additional programming for multiple user codes or tenant entries: $75 – $150 flat

The price range comes down to three things: which Linear model you have, how much wiring needs to be replaced or rerun, and whether we’re matching an existing system or starting fresh. We write the price before any work starts, and that number doesn’t move. Every access control installation carries our full 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the install fails within a year, we return at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the obvious things: is the breaker on? Is the keypad getting power at all? Is the housing cracked and letting water in? Those observations help us quote faster. But anything beyond visual inspection involves low-voltage wiring, and while it’s not high-tension like a gate spring, a wrong connection on a Linear control board can take out the operator’s main logic board too. We’ve cleaned up enough DIY wiring jobs in Miami to say plainly: this one is best left to someone who has done it before. Call us at (850) 821-3781 and we’ll give you a straight answer on what you’re looking at. Price in writing before anything moves, that’s just how it should work.
